DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
(DBA)

Doctor of Business Administration is a professional doctorate degree awarded on the basis of advanced study, examinations, project work and research in business administration.

Along with academic Ph.D., it represents the highest professional qualification in business administration. Besides business and entrepreneurship, it is also useful to gain employment as a full-time, tenure-track university professor or post-doctoral researcher in the field.

DBA candidates submit a project proposal for a dissertation, consisting of an original academic research that is worthy of publication in a peer-reviewed journal. To finish the studies, the candidates must defend the thesis during the official defence.

Studies

DBA program focuses primarily on research related to business or finance sphere. Its most important part is writig a disertation thesis. In addition, every student needs to complete 5 mandatory courses.

Students are typically experienced managers who have an idea about their research they want to perform during the studies. 

A candidate for DBA degree must have completed an online course (taught component + dissertation thesis). Completion of DBA program usually takes 3 years of study (although it is possible to complete it earlier as the pace can be adjusted individually). This period can be extended up to 5 years in total.

Taught Component

Taught component requires to obtain 180 credits during the course. Students need to complete the following courses for academic or professional career.

In business simulations, you will play a real-world economic-engine-powered online game.
Since DBA is research-based, the core of the study is to write a dissertation thesis of at least 25,000 words.

Some students prefer to have vocational training on their diplomas as their local job market expects that. Therefore, such students may opt for vocational training instead of taking a Negotiations Course.

Students choose only 2 out of 3 starred (*) courses.

Business Simulations

Online game called SimCompanies with a real-world economic engine will test your business planning and skills. 

In order to pass the course, students do not need to play the game for several days. It can be played for 10 minutes per day for several weeks. Also:

  • Students may take a break for an extensive period of time if they are busy  (unless they issued bonds and need to log-in to repay).
  • Students will write a review paper on strategy and report company documents at the end of the course. They will also discuss the strategy with other students via Discord.

Dissertation Thesis

The core of DBA program is writing a research-based dissertation

  • The min. length of dissertation is 25,000 words. Exceptionally, it may be 20,000 words. The work cannot be only descriptive – it has to present new research.
  • Students can find their own supervisor and even an opponent. We need a one-page review from each.
  • There can be a 3rd advisor from EIASM as a formal consultant to provide guidance on academic or research writing skills, structure, citations, library resources, layout. 

The thesis can be defended only if all of them grant positive recommendations.

Admission Criteria

  • MBA degree / 5 years of work experience (managerial / finance position)
  • Proficiency in English:
    TOEFL / IELTS tests / 2 years of work or study in English-speaking environment
